"The lifespan of a high quality
trimmer is measured in years, low quality trimmers are measured in
weeks."

There is a wide array of
string grass trimmers available. Some are very low cost, around $60,
and some are really expensive, ranging over $1000.00. Deciding which
ones to buy can be very challenging. Most people just cut to the chase
and purchase the lower cost models. Unfortunately, these models tend to
be disappointing.
It usually takes a new home owner about 5 years of going through
different trimmers before they realize that they need to find something
that's built to do what they need it to do, and built to last.
Take a look at some of the typical problems with low quality
trimmers:
- low power - difficulty cutting thicker weeds
- difficult to start
- starting cord pulls out
- trimmer kicks debris back onto you
- awkward to handle
- drive shaft continuously snaps
- much more
Most of the low quality trimmers never make it beyond 1 or 2 seasons of
use without having at least one of the above problems resulting in a
trip to the repair shop. You can significantly reduce your chances of
having any of these problems by following the next rule.
Major Rule #1: Get a brand name trimmer that is used by professional
landscapers. These guys and gals use these string trimmers daily, so
they need something that's going to last, and most often they will tell
you that those brands are Sthil and Echo. These brands of trimmers will
work when you need them, and will be easy to work with, year after
year.
Recommended rule #2: Get a trimmer that fits your needs. If you have a
very tiny lot with easy access to an electrical outlet and don't mind
string along an extension cord, then get an electrical trimmer. But
don't make the mistake of getting an electrical trimmer when you really
need a cordless one. You'll just end up not using it. Many people opt
for electrical trimmers only to find that they utterly hate the cord
tangle and restricted range (limited to the length of the extension
cord).
