Is a Bigger Engine Better?
Common Problems

Once you make the decision on which quality trimmer to buy, be sure to take care of it and it will surely provide you with many years of good use.

If you happen to live in an area where you don't use your trimmer for extended periods of time, like during the winter months, then you should make sure you do some simple things that will help keep your trimmer healthy and ensure smooth starting in the spring.

Here are some of the best things you can do to help keep your trimmer in good shape during those down times:

1) Drain the gasoline tank and clean any oil and dirt from the outside casing. You don’t want to leave any gas sitting in it for extended periods of time. Also, any oil on the outside could stain the casing. Cleaning with a cloth will keep it looking new.

2) Remove the spark plug and take 1/4 of an ounce of clean engine oil and pour it into the spark plug hole. This will put a layer of protection across the cylinder to help prevent any corrosion. Now put a clean rag over the spark plug hole and slowly pull the starter cord 3 times to distribute the oil. Then screw in the spark plug but don't connect the ignition cable.

3) Check all screws, bolts and latches and tighten if needed. Don’t try to over tighten anything. Use common sense, if something seems lose, tighten it. Sometimes due to vibration certain things may become looser over time. Just give it a look over and you will notice what might need an adjustment.

4) Most trimmers have a button or switch that can be set to off, start or choke. If yours has one of these switches make sure it’s in the “off” position during storage.

5) Place in a moisture-free and dust-free environment. You certainly don’t want your trimmer getting wet or dusty. Keeping it outside in a garage is fine; just make sure it’s going to stay dry and relatively free of dirt and dust.

Also be sure to also perform any regular maintenance services on your machine as recommended by the manufacture.

Most people don't do anything special with their trimmers when they don't use them for extended periods of time, like over the winter season. However, these basic quick steps will help keep your trimmer running and starting like new every spring.

Happy Trimming!
